I had to create an account on Experian's web site to get my "free" $1 credit report. Well, that was all fine and dandy, but, today, I noticed a $23+ charge to my credit card!. Apparently, somewhere buried in the fine print in the signup process is a statement that says one is automatically enrolled into Experian's credit reporting "services".

I called them up and talked to a rep and I told them that I had no idea that I was signing up for some service with an associated monthly charge and that I wanted a refund. I told them I'd file a claim against them through my credit card or a small-claims court suit if they didn't refund my money. The rep said that they didn't usually issue refunds so he had to go check with his manager. When he got back he said that they had man a "special exception" in my case and that I'd get my money back in 3 to 5 business days.

This business with Experian signing me up for something *which I did not willingly want* is *fraud*, plain and simple, or, at least, it's shady/unethical business practice.

Watch out for this kind of scheme and always read the fine print -- I didn't and I got burned...

Reason of review: automatic signup for service with monthly fee.

Monetary Loss: $23.

Preferred solution: Change you "free" $1 credit report page so that there's a *big red check box* asking if one wants to sign up for a service for a monthly fee.

You encountered a very common scam---giving a customer a free or nominally-charged product but also signing you up for a monthly service. This happens with regularity now.

Best to always read carefully what you are actually signing up for and to verify your monthly card statements.

Also, never use a debit card, not just online but everywhere. They are extremely dangerous as your money is debited immediately, not later as with a credit card.
